Eight glasses of water myth

July 14th, 2011

Just came across this article published in the Guardian Online.  Apparently, one Glaswegian GP wrote in the BMJ that there is not enough scientific evidence that we all should be drinking at least “eight glasses of water” per day.

See link: http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2011/jul/13/myth-eight-glasses-water-day

Personally I think it is better for your body to be hydrated than de-hydrated, and therefore, I am making sure that I drink plenty of tap water during the day.  However, I don’t count how many glasses I drink, but I go according to the colour of my urine or whenever I feel thirsty.  So, some days I might drink more than on other days, depending on what I am doing physically and how hot/cold it is outside.

I suppose it shows that sometimes or shall I say most of the times, we like to make a fuss about “nothing”.

"An outdoor quickie enough to improve the mood"

September 23rd, 2010

A recent study done by the University of Essex in Environmental Science and Technology, showed that just five minutes exercising in open air can lead to immediate improvement in mood and self-esteem.

The study used information from 10 existing studies, analysing 1,252 people, and it showed that the presence of nature (blue and green environments, even urban green) led to mental health and physical improvements. The activities studied were walking, gardening, cycling, fishing, boating, horse riding and farming.

So, I say, even though we are now hitting autumn and winter time, don’t stay at home or at work all day, get out there and feel good!

Yoga reduces inflammation levels

January 21st, 2010

Anyone who is interested in yoga and what health benefits it gives you when you practice it regularly should read the added link. It is all about a study that has been done by the Ohio State University and was just reported in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine. It explains a link between practicing yoga and having less of cytokine interleukin in the blood that causes inflammation. Cytokine levels if high have been related to heart diseases, type 2 diabetes, arthritis and other age related diseases. This could mean since practicing yoga reduces cytokine levels in the blood that you could be provided with substantial  short- and long-term health benefits, even though your stress levels in life could be high.
